I first read this book as a young man 45 years ago, and I fell in love with it. I served 26 years in the Air Force as an SP, and I saw a lot of terrible things, in and out of the service. I fell out of love with God, and stopped living gospel principles, but because of the Plan of Salvation I never lost my belief in the LDS faith. This book has been a favorite of mine ever since I was a young girl. I have read it many times an will read it again. I had a copy of the first edition but lost it and was so happy to find it as an ebook on . I highly recommend it to everyone. It is a beautiful story.
Plot
Added Upon is a story that takes place during the three phases of a person's life Pre-existence, mortality, and life after death. Homan and Delsa are caught up in the events that led to the casting out of Lucifer and his followers from Heaven, and are later given the opportunity to come to Earth. Having forgotten all they must follow the events of their lives that will help them return to the presence of their Heavenly Father.
Although the characters of this book are fiction Nephi Anderson does an incredible job at writing out things that have happened, and showing an interpretation of what the world could be like in the future. When I was reading this the story filled my heart with hope and refueled the fire in me to do my family history and genealogy. I loved how Anderson suggested that even though things will be different in the future with the Savior ruling in Zion people will still be able to create in the arts, including writing. Even if you don't agree with some of the beliefs of the author you will love the story for its imagery and the feeling of hope.
Caution
The word hell is used once, but only in its proper form. Some people are said to have been drinking, but are not seen.
Lessons
What is sealed on Earth will be sealed in Heaven. Death will not be the end of us. With faith in Jesus Christ anything is possible.
This book was written over a century ago, but it it still very readable. It follows the lintertwined lives of several families as they experience the joys and trials of life and helps to answer the questions, "Where did I come from... why am I here... where am I going when I die?"
To consider where we came from, what life's true purpose is now, and how it all fits together in eternity is the genius of this book.
I bought this book as a replacement for one I had years ago. I am a Mormon. This is a novel based on our belief that we lived in Heaven with God and Jesus before coming to the earth. It chronicles the life of souls who knew each other and how their lives cross after they get to earth. They have no recollection of their prior existence. A good read.
One of my favorite Mormon books. got turned onto it by Daniel C. Petersen. It's really an adolescent's book about friends from before life into this life according to LDS understanding. I've read this book three times now and keep it nearby as its fun to read.
I had this book as a teenager and read it about three times in my life, maybe more. It has been a long time since I read it and just finished it today. As my understanding of the Gospel has matured, the book was easier to understand. But it really was fun to read a novel that was written about 125 years ago. The one thing that gave me a little chuckle was that his estimate of temples at the time of the millenium was short about 40 from what we have today. Nephi Anderson really has an understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This was my first kindle book that I read and it was a treat.
